With more than 130 years of experience, Holland America Line is recognized as the undisputed leader in the cruise industry's premium segment. Its 13 ships sail to more than 280 ports of call on all seven continents, ranging from popular Caribbean and Alaska itineraries to exotic cruises to the far corners of the world. A 14th, 2,044-guest, 86,000 ton ship has been ordered and scheduled for delivery summer 2008, marking the first ship in the Signature Class series and the largest new build for Holland America Line.
Over the course of the company's long history, first as a cargo- and passenger-shipping carrier, and subsequently a leisure-cruise line, Holland America Line has carried more than 10 million passengers from Europe to the New World and to vacation destinations across the globe.
Continuing a Tradition of Excellence through Signature of Excellence
Holland America Line recently announced an unprecedented $225 million investment in unparalleled product and service enhancements to its fleet of five-star ships. Called Signature of Excellence, this initiative will build on Holland America Line's renowned Tradition of Excellence™ by significantly raising the standard in premium cruising. The comprehensive enhancements focus on five areas central to the Holland America Line guest experience: spacious, elegant ships and accommodations; sophisticated five-star dining; gracious, unobtrusive service; extensive enrichment programs and activities; and compelling worldwide itineraries.
Enhancements have been executed on eleven ships and are expected to be completed throughout the fleet by the end of 2006.
Providing Passage to the New World
Holland America Line was founded in 1873 as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company (NASM), a shipping and passenger line. Because it was headquartered in Rotterdam and provided service to the Americas, it became known as Holland America Line. The company's first ocean liner was the Rotterdam, which sailed its maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New York City on Oct. 15, 1872. The one-way voyage took 15 days. Following that first voyage, Holland America Line has seen a series of benchmark moments in its history.

Want to Work On the Cruise Lines??
Nikmati… Enjoy aja..!! Good Luck!

Life On Board the Ships
Working on a cruise ship is an experience that you never forget. However, before you apply, you must realise that most jobs on cruise liners are very difficult and demanding. There are certain pros and cons which should be considered.
Pros:
If you work on a cruise ship, you travel to many attractive destinations and see interesting places. Although you spend most of the time aboard, there are some chances to go ashore and see the sites.
You meet people from all over the world and may forge some enduring friendships.
You can earn quite a lot of money. Since you do not have many opportunities to spend the money aboard, you can easily save most of it.
You get free accommodation and food. Moreover, you don’t have to pay the utility bills.
Cons:
It is very difficult to get a job on a cruise liner.
You will work long hours – 12 or 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Accommodation for the cruise staff is very modest. On newer ships two people or, on older ships, even more share a small cabin and a bathroom. The crew cabins of the major cruise lines have televisions supplied. Most cabins are situated on one of the lower decks and they do not have windows. You have to give up some of your habits and get used to those of your roommates'.
You will be at sea in all types of weather. If you suffer from severe sea-sickness, perhaps you should find a job ashore. Light forms of sea-sickness, however, are common amongst experienced seamen.
When you sign the contract with a cruise line company, you will usually pass a course on work safety, first aid and hygiene. You get free medical care in case you get ill on a cruise ship. Your employer - the cruise line - will pay for your health insurance for the period of the contract. This duty is based on the international conventions regarding employment at sea.
Cruise line staff can use the various leisure facilities on most ships, such as the gym, fitness centre, swimming pool, bar and meeting room. These facilities are only for the staff. Most employees do not socialise with the passengers during their free time. They are not allowed to use the facilities for the passengers.
Most cruise liners embark in the USA. You will be probably required to pay the travel expenses from your home to the port yourself. Most cruise line companies want their employees to buy a single way ticket and pay the travel deposit that will be returned to you when the contract is over. However, if you decide to leave before the contract terminates or if you get fired, you will forfeit your deposit. It will be used for purchasing the ticket back to your home country. You will be guarded to the airport to make sure you leave the USA and do not stay there illegally. The deposit is usually from $300 to $500. Some of the largest cruise lines recalled the deposit payments so that the new employees have less expenses (e.g. Carnival Cruise Lines Inc.).

What's Brewing Over at Royal Caribbean?
Cruise lines have long offered signature drinks -- like Carnival's "Fun Ship Special" (think fruity cocktail) and Holland America's cucumber smash (imagine a very healthy martini) -- and more recently have moved into creating their own private wine labels (examples include Celebrity Vineyards and Crystal's C Wines). Now, something new is brewing ... and yes, we're talking about beer.
Royal Caribbean is now offering its own Belgian ale fleetwide: Royal Legendary Belgian Ale. They're keeping it low key for some inexplicable reason (I found out about the beer by reading an advertisement on a table card outside the Bull and Bear Pub on Freedom of the Seas). And the description alone offered an incentive to try it: "While exploring the depths of the Caribbean, adventurers discovered amongst sunken treasures a Legendary Belgian Ale recipe. Brought back to a Belgian brewery, this time-honored recipe is now being brewed exclusively for Royal Caribbean."
Okay, we know the recipe wasn't really discovered amongst sunken treasures (we asked), but it is still a fun story and a mighty fine libation. If you like traditional Belgian wheat ales -- like Hoegaarden, which is actually brewed in Belgium, and Blue Moon -- you'll enjoy Royal; it's not quite as pale in color but citrus-y, crisp and refreshing. Royal Legendary Belgian Ale is a limited-time offering on all ships -- but a spokeswoman tells us that due to its popularity there's no end date in mind and that the line will continue production in the immediate future. Bottoms up!
