Seven Tips to a Job-Winning Interview

These days, interviews don't come easily. When you get The Call, make the most of your time -- and go for it!

1. Investigate the company's culture, markets, and finances. But resist the temptation to show off what you've researched: "I just read that you're about to embark on a new product line") unless you have a question directly related to your career.

2. Look like you belong. Learn the company's dress code and err on the side of conservatism. When you're seeking a senior position based on industry experience, you'll be expected to know the rules without being told.

3. Take charge of the interview! The most successful interviews feel like friendly conversations. When your interviewer has an agenda (such as the infamous "stress interview") stay relaxed. Think of playing a game.

4. Assume everyone you meet will provide feedback to the decision-maker. Some companies hand out comment forms to receptionists, security guards and potential peers who take you to lunch.

5. Communicate interest and enthusiasm, even if you're not sure you're ready to commit. You'll rarely have all the facts until you're looking at an offer.

6. Bring extra copies of your correspondence from this company as well as your resume, references, writing samples, portfolio and current business cards. Interviewers lose documents and conversations move in unexpected directions.

7. Create a relaxed, positive attitude by devising a realistic game plan. When your career isn't riding on a single interview, you'll have fun and make a confident, relaxed impression.
8. Write a thank you letter within forty-eight hours. Create a low-key sales letter, emphasizing how your qualifications match the company's needs. Present yourself as a resource, not a supplicant.

9. After you write the letter, forget about the interview. Email or phone only if you've received a competing offer with a deadline.

Occasionally you may make points with follow-up mailings. A sports team public relations applicant sent puzzles, games and press releases -- and she got the job. Use your intuition.
10. Keep notes of what you learned from the process. What worked? What would you do differently?

The Alaska Cruise- A Living Memory

The Alaska cruise is a major attraction drawing vacationers with its majestic scenery, gleaming glaciers, exotic wildlife, and Native American culture. Ships are normally on a seven-day excursion package to Alaska and they stop at four ports on their passage, visiting Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. You may like to opt for an extended cruise-tour comprehensive package where you go by train around Alaska and it includes lodging and seeing the sights in Denali National Park.

Due to weather hindrances, cruises to Alaska are strictly restricted during the summer months from early May to Mid Sept. June, July and August are the peak seasons when the average daily temperatures reach up to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The best time to sail is May and September as temperatures soar around 50 degrees. Luxury vessels and midsize ships sail from Vancouver, BC and Seattle. At both embarkment and disembarkment points, you are able to visit the ports of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

The wonder world of Alaska is waiting for you. The mountains, waterfalls, the humpback whales and frolicking sea lions, the breathtaking forests, wildlife and the snowcapped mountains-is all there for you. Alaska is fascinating, explorative and full of new discoveries. Each new day ushers in new surprises. Alaska is the most memorable place on the earth. You see the breathtaking view of Mt. McKinley as it rises grandly over Denali National Park. Imagine yourself bird watching, hiking through the glacier waterfalls outside Juneau and sea kayak on the Tongass National Park harbor.

Alaska is a place full of adventures with its one hundred thousand glaciers and 3 million lakes. To enjoy the Alaska experience your first option should be a Gulf of Alaska cruise tour, along with Voyage of the Glaciers cruise with an option of land tours. You won't soon forget the Freestyle Cruising Alaska offers.

Experience the early frontier existence from America's oldest Russian Orthodox Church in the San Diego's Gaslamp District, and the vineries of Santa Barbara. You will enjoy a trolley car ride to Chinatown or Fisherman's Wharf. As your ship sails through Glacier Bay, you experience nature to the fullest.

Visa and Work Permits

Firstly, to be able to travel abroad, you will need a valid passport. Apart from the passport, it is recommended to have other ID documents with you all the time, such as a driving license. Once you get to the ship the purser will file your passport and other documents and keep them in a safe, since you won't need them during the cruise.

Most staff on cruise ships do not come from the same country from where the ship is registered. Therefore many of them need a valid visa and/or work permit to work on a cruise ship legally.

If your ship embarks from a port in the USA or you have a stopover in one of the US ports, you will need the appropriate visa. You do not need to apply for a Green Card. All you need is your letter of employment (from your employer) and apply for C1Transit, D1 Seamen and B2 Visitor visa at the US embassy in your country. These visas allow you to enter the USA for a limited time (usually 30 days) only when your ship calls to a US port.

If you choose to stay in the USA, you will need to return to your home country to apply for the work permit - you cannot stay in the USA with C1/D1/B2 visa. Contact the US embassy in your country for more information.

If your cruise ship is registered in the UK, you will need to apply for the appropriate work permit at the British embassy in your country, unless you come from a country of the European Economic Area (EEA): Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.
Nationals of 8 new member states of the European Union need to register with the Home Office (Workers Registration Scheme) if they haven't worked in the UK legally for a period of at least 12 months before. This applies to the citizens of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

If your ship cruises the waters under the Italian, Greek, Norwegian, German, or French flag, you need to apply for the appropriate work visa unless you are a national of one of the old EU countries. Read more about work permits and work visas in Germany, France and other countries.

Cruise ship companies are used to employing staff from all over the world. They know how to obtain necessary visas and work permits. They will assist you and guide you through the process of applying for all the work visas and permits once they give you a job offer and you accept it.

Cruise Travel Insurance - A Need To Cover Your Vacation

When you are in the midst of planning your cruise travel vacation, the last thing on your mind is thinking about the possibility that you might have to cancel your plans. People often completely overlook cruise travel insurance or they simply put it on the back burner and forget about it altogether. But, if you are spending thousands of dollars for your dream cruise, then you should take the time to know what vacation coverage options are available.

When you do go out to buy travel insurance, you need to be sure that you take the time to compare the different cruise insurance policies in order to be sure you get the coverage you are expecting. As with most things, you need to take the approach of "buyer beware" and be careful not to assume anything. In other words, ask plenty of questions and get things clarified before you buy.

This word of warning should not be construed as an implication that all travel insurance companies are only after your money, with the intent of not paying if a claim is filed. The fact is that any insurance company, cruise travel insurance companies included, are governed by state and federal regulations and most are on the up and up.

But the problems arise when people try to economize and cut corners when buying it. When it comes to cruise insurance, or any kind of indemnity coverage for that matter, you can be assured that you will only get what you paid for in the end. Buying the cheapest policy you can find will make you feel that you have been ripped off if it doesn't give you the coverage you need, when it is needed.

It's easy to get either overwhelmed or simply become complacent when looking at all of the options and variables that come up when trying to secure travel insurance. When you are scrambling to make your cruise travel vacation plans and then are busy getting ready for the voyage, it is often hard to focus and sort through the different policy options. This combined with trying to go for the cheapest coverage possible can contribute to dissatisfaction when it comes time to file a claim.

Before making a final decision and buying such a policy, be sure that you know exactly what is covered and what is not. Some travel insurance companies offer Comprehensive Coverage policies that will cover just about any contingency. These are usually the more expensive because they will pay benefits under the widest set of circumstances.

Other policies for it cover a very narrow set of conditions. Because they cover fewer circumstances, they are less likely to pay for a claim and so the premiums on these policies are considerably less. But the danger here is getting a policy that is essentially worthless because the terms and conditions are so narrowly defined that you are not likely to benefit from a claim, should the need arise.

When you have put your money, your hopes and your dreams into your cruise vacation, be sure that you protect that travel investment by getting good cruise travel insurance. Spend some focused, quality time in researching your options and always read the fine print before making a final decision about coverage. Travel agents can recommend good travel insurance companies, and online travel forums can provide candid reviews and honest experiences from other travelers.

COMPANY PROFILE HAL

With more than 130 years of experience, Holland America Line is recognized as the undisputed leader in the cruise industry's premium segment. Its 13 ships sail to more than 280 ports of call on all seven continents, ranging from popular Caribbean and Alaska itineraries to exotic cruises to the far corners of the world. A 14th, 2,044-guest, 86,000 ton ship has been ordered and scheduled for delivery summer 2008, marking the first ship in the Signature Class series and the largest new build for Holland America Line.
Over the course of the company's long history, first as a cargo- and passenger-shipping carrier, and subsequently a leisure-cruise line, Holland America Line has carried more than 10 million passengers from Europe to the New World and to vacation destinations across the globe.

Continuing a Tradition of Excellence through Signature of Excellence
Holland America Line recently announced an unprecedented $225 million investment in unparalleled product and service enhancements to its fleet of five-star ships. Called Signature of Excellence, this initiative will build on Holland America Line's renowned Tradition of Excellence™ by significantly raising the standard in premium cruising. The comprehensive enhancements focus on five areas central to the Holland America Line guest experience: spacious, elegant ships and accommodations; sophisticated five-star dining; gracious, unobtrusive service; extensive enrichment programs and activities; and compelling worldwide itineraries.
Enhancements have been executed on eleven ships and are expected to be completed throughout the fleet by the end of 2006.

Providing Passage to the New World
Holland America Line was founded in 1873 as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company (NASM), a shipping and passenger line. Because it was headquartered in Rotterdam and provided service to the Americas, it became known as Holland America Line. The company's first ocean liner was the Rotterdam, which sailed its maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New York City on Oct. 15, 1872. The one-way voyage took 15 days. Following that first voyage, Holland America Line has seen a series of benchmark moments in its history.

  • By its 25th anniversary, Holland America Line owned a fleet of six cargo and passenger ships, and also provided service between Holland and the Dutch East Indies via the newly constructed Suez Canal.
  • The line was a principal carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying 850,000 to new lives in the New World.
  • In 1895, the company offered its first vacation cruise; its second leisure cruise, from New York to the Holy Land, was in 1910.
  • In 1971, Holland America Line suspended its transatlantic passenger trade and turned to offering cruise vacations full time.
  • In 1989, Holland America Line Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corp., the largest cruise company in the world.

Want to Work On the Cruise Lines??

Nikmati… Enjoy aja..!! Good Luck! Read More...

    Life On Board the Ships

Working on a cruise ship is an experience that you never forget. However, before you apply, you must realise that most jobs on cruise liners are very difficult and demanding. There are certain pros and cons which should be considered.

    Pros:
If you work on a cruise ship, you travel to many attractive destinations and see interesting places. Although you spend most of the time aboard, there are some chances to go ashore and see the sites.
You meet people from all over the world and may forge some enduring friendships.
You can earn quite a lot of money. Since you do not have many opportunities to spend the money aboard, you can easily save most of it.
You get free accommodation and food. Moreover, you don’t have to pay the utility bills.

    Cons:
It is very difficult to get a job on a cruise liner.
You will work long hours – 12 or 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Accommodation for the cruise staff is very modest. On newer ships two people or, on older ships, even more share a small cabin and a bathroom. The crew cabins of the major cruise lines have televisions supplied. Most cabins are situated on one of the lower decks and they do not have windows. You have to give up some of your habits and get used to those of your roommates'.
You will be at sea in all types of weather. If you suffer from severe sea-sickness, perhaps you should find a job ashore. Light forms of sea-sickness, however, are common amongst experienced seamen.
When you sign the contract with a cruise line company, you will usually pass a course on work safety, first aid and hygiene. You get free medical care in case you get ill on a cruise ship. Your employer - the cruise line - will pay for your health insurance for the period of the contract. This duty is based on the international conventions regarding employment at sea.

Cruise line staff can use the various leisure facilities on most ships, such as the gym, fitness centre, swimming pool, bar and meeting room. These facilities are only for the staff. Most employees do not socialise with the passengers during their free time. They are not allowed to use the facilities for the passengers.

Most cruise liners embark in the USA. You will be probably required to pay the travel expenses from your home to the port yourself. Most cruise line companies want their employees to buy a single way ticket and pay the travel deposit that will be returned to you when the contract is over. However, if you decide to leave before the contract terminates or if you get fired, you will forfeit your deposit. It will be used for purchasing the ticket back to your home country. You will be guarded to the airport to make sure you leave the USA and do not stay there illegally. The deposit is usually from $300 to $500. Some of the largest cruise lines recalled the deposit payments so that the new employees have less expenses (e.g. Carnival Cruise Lines Inc.). Read More...

What's Brewing Over at Royal Caribbean?

Cruise lines have long offered signature drinks -- like Carnival's "Fun Ship Special" (think fruity cocktail) and Holland America's cucumber smash (imagine a very healthy martini) -- and more recently have moved into creating their own private wine labels (examples include Celebrity Vineyards and Crystal's C Wines). Now, something new is brewing ... and yes, we're talking about beer.

Royal Caribbean is now offering its own Belgian ale fleetwide: Royal Legendary Belgian Ale. They're keeping it low key for some inexplicable reason (I found out about the beer by reading an advertisement on a table card outside the Bull and Bear Pub on Freedom of the Seas). And the description alone offered an incentive to try it: "While exploring the depths of the Caribbean, adventurers discovered amongst sunken treasures a Legendary Belgian Ale recipe. Brought back to a Belgian brewery, this time-honored recipe is now being brewed exclusively for Royal Caribbean."

Okay, we know the recipe wasn't really discovered amongst sunken treasures (we asked), but it is still a fun story and a mighty fine libation. If you like traditional Belgian wheat ales -- like Hoegaarden, which is actually brewed in Belgium, and Blue Moon -- you'll enjoy Royal; it's not quite as pale in color but citrus-y, crisp and refreshing. Royal Legendary Belgian Ale is a limited-time offering on all ships -- but a spokeswoman tells us that due to its popularity there's no end date in mind and that the line will continue production in the immediate future. Bottoms up! Read More...

Recruitment Agents for Cruise Line Jobs

Almost all major cruise lines have their own recruitment agents established in particular regions of the world. The cruise line companies would not answer your inquiries at all - or they would send your inquiry to one of their agents.

The best way of finding employment on a cruise ship is to contact a recruitment agent who works for the specific cruise line, if you have decided which cruise line you wish to work for. The personnel departments of the cruise lines would not be able to manage all the inquiries from particular applicants from over the world and that is why they use the service of the recruitment agents.

    Be careful!
There are many advertisements that offer information about cruise jobs. You need to pay for the leaflet or book. These are fake, very often containing misleading information that will not help anyone to get a job.
The recruitment agent checks the applicant's experience, references, criminal record and they will arrange the medical examinations so that the cruise line representative meets completely prepared people at the interview.

Most recruitment agents provide training for hired crew - starting from basic courses which have to prepare the new employee to the new circumstances ending with the special STCW courses which some cruise lines already require (STCW - International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). All the courses last a couple of days each. Read More...
